Lumen
Turn an idle LG TV into a calm ambient display: full-screen imagery, short quotes, local weather and a clock. No account, no ads, and it keeps playing offline.
What it does
Lumen turns an idle LG TV into a quiet display. It shows full-screen imagery with slow transitions, short quotes and “did you know” cards, local weather for your city, and a clock in 12 or 24 hour format. Cards alternate between English and Macedonian.
There is no account and no ads. If the network drops, Lumen keeps playing from a local cache. It runs on LG webOS TVs from webOS 4.0, at 1920 by 1080.
How it works
- Open. Lumen starts with a default feed of imagery and text.
- Choose a city. Weather is local, and the clock runs in 12 or 24 hour format.
- Connect your own feed. In the TV settings, enter the address of a feed, plus an access code if it has one.
- Leave it on. Media is cached on the TV, so playback survives a dropped connection.
How the lab built it
An open content contract
A Lumen feed is one HTTP endpoint that returns a documented JSON playlist, optionally protected by an access code. Because the format is published, anyone can point Lumen at their own feed of images and text.
Built to survive a bad connection
Media is cached locally in IndexedDB, so the playlist keeps running offline. The interface is drawn on a fixed 1920 by 1080 canvas and scaled to any screen, with a two-layer crossfade engine for transitions. It is a webOS app built with Preact and Vite.
Who it’s for
Lumen is for homes, cafes, waiting rooms and shops with an LG TV that is often idle. It turns the screen into a calm display, and anyone can point it at their own feed of images and text.
